Subject: Dungeness Crab (Metacarcinus magister)

Expedition: this photo was taken on the return leg of our 2024 expedition to Haida Gwaii. British Columbia, Canada.

Location: Cabbage Island – on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. British Columbia, Canada.

About Dungeness Crabs: A west coast species of true crab ranging from the Aleutian Islands to southern California. They thrive in colder water, making the ocean off British Columbia a prime fishing area. Often dismissed as aimless scavengers, Dungeness crabs are, in fact, adept hunters with a highly developed sense of smell. Using their acute olfactory abilities, they detect chemical cues in the water, locating prey with startling precision. Opportunistic and adaptable, these crabs employ diverse hunting strategies, including ambushing small fish and chasing down prey. This image captures rarely seen behaviour: a dramatic moment as a Dungeness crab eyes up and chases down three pile perch showcasing its speed and skill as a calculated predator.

Paper type: Lustre. I chose Luster for it's balance between fantastic brightness, colour vibrancy, and reduced glare. With Lustre paper you can view the photograph from all angles, unlike high-glare glossy paper. Lustre is also fingerprint resistant making it easier to handle and frame at home. Thickness: 10 mil (0.25 mm) thick.

Waste reduction: This product is made especially for you as soon as you place an order. Making products on demand, instead of in bulk, helps me reduce overproduction and waste. Thank you for helping me making thoughtful purchasing decisions!
